Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a serious condition that affects 4-9% of the United States population. Many individuals who snore also suffer from OSA. People with OSA have disrupted sleep and low blood oxygen levels caused by airway obstruction at night. Patients often complain of waking up gasping for air and daytime sleepiness. Repeated cycles of decreased oxygenation may also lead to serious cardiovascular problems, depression, and loss of concentration.
If there is some question as to whether your snoring is accompanied by the more serious sleep apnea condition, your physician may order an overnight sleep study which can be completed in the comfort of your own bed. Home sleep studies allow us to monitor your sleep patterns without interrupting your nightly routine. The information is stored on a removable memory card and downloaded for us to analyze. Our doctors will then be able to recommend an appropriate treatment method for you.
